Living Room - 7 Color and Furniture Guidelines to Keep in Mind
as You Design...
Designing your living room
using Feng Shui principles can be fun and creative! Here's a
golden opportunity to create a vibrant "living" space in your
home that embodies your finest tastes and casts the reflection
you wish to show to those who grace your home!
Creating a Feng Shui living
room that is welcoming, relaxing and invites positive energy
flowing in and through the room is a good goal to have for your
home. Taking care to do this will enrich gatherings with family
and friends as everyone will be more at ease and relaxed when
Chi is able to flow unhindered.
Here are seven color and
furniture guidelines to help you make a Feng Shui living room
design for this very special place in your home. Keep this
checklist handy for best Feng Shui results!
- Do a personality
profile on yourself. What are your favorite
colors? Artwork? Are you outgoing or introverted? Do you
have any special art collections or travel mementos that
would display well here? Choose colors and collections that
are the most meaningful and comfortable to you and your
family members who share this space on a daily basis with
you.
- Consider
including touches of the Fire Element because of
the social nature of this space. Make sure to include
touches of the other four Elements as well, without
overdoing Water's influence.
- Choose furniture with these two important
considerations in mind: comfort and safety. Avoid
sharp edges and annoying pieces that tend to catch
clothing, etc. Seating should be comfortable, yet have
adequate back support.
Ask yourself the question - does my furniture annoy me
in any way? If so, try rearranging or consider
replacing offending pieces. Furniture that is broken needs
to be repaired or removed.

SIDENOTE:
A number of years ago now a close friend and I
decided to build a coffee table made of cherry
wood for a wedding gift. We were very proud of
our accomplishment at the time - but the one
thing we neglected to do was round the sharp
edges of the corners!
The table was a rectangular shape and quite
large - a beautiful piece of furniture but with
one agonizing flaw...it was jutting "poison
arrows" into the living room of our friends!
Unfortunately, more than once this gift
delivered painful blows to passing shins and
knees...ouch!

When placing furniture and making
pathways through the living room area,
keep in mind that you want an unrestricted and
meandering flow of positive energy or Chi. If you
have furniture with sharp or protruding edges,
think of ways to soften their presence by draping
color coordinated fabrics or placing plants with
rounded leaves.
-
Take your time when shopping for living
room furniture. Make sure you and your
family members try out the sofa and chairs prior to
purchasing.
-
Try to avoid positioning chairs or
sofas with their backs against a window.
This tends to restrict the flow of Chi and can
cause feelings of vulnerability.
-
Furniture placement guidelines -
try not to have seating arrangements where people's
backs are to the door or entryway into the room.
Strive for an arrangement where all seating
positions have at least a partial view of the
entryway or door.
Feng
Shui also recommends not positioning chairs that directly
face one another as this can subliminally connote
confrontation. If this cannot be avoided, try placing a
buffering table between the chairs. This helps break down
any barrier that may develop between two people sitting
directly opposite one another...and it will also help them
relax.
Feng
Shui living room goals are easy to achieve when
following these simple guidelines. Create a family
paradise that is warm, welcoming and a fun place to
share with friends!
